We also offer daily, Intensive Language Development classes for students between the ages of four and six. Our intensive programmes are content-based and designed to encourage the academic, social, physical and emotional development of young children. This ensures that children get the best possible start to their education in the English language. Language Development A

For children 4 years old
Our Language Development A children are gently encouraged to become more independent and to develop self-help skills that will help them to become more effective learners. They are encouraged to take turns, show kindness to others and share with their friends.

By the end of our Language Development A programme, we aim for the students to be able to: :
  • recognise and name the letters of the alphabet
  • identify some initial letter sounds (phonics)
  • recognise rhythm and recite familiar songs, finger plays and rhymes
  • appreciate stories and be able to retell a simple story in their own words
  • relate to other children well and express themselves in ways that are socially acceptable
  • listen to others and participate co-operatively in group activities
  • use a pencil correctly to draw and to form letters
  • develop improved fine motor control skills
  • understand and follow simple instructions
  • speak confidently about their own personal experiences
  • use a sufficiently broad vocabulary to be able to express themselves

Language Development B

For children 5 years old
We give our Language Development B children hands-on experiences to ensure their learning is meaningful. Phonics becomes a more central part of our literacy scheme alongside big books and group reading. Each Language Development B student continues to follow our individualised reading programme which is regularly monitored by the class teacher. Throughout the year, children work towards independent writing and as well as focussing on developing strong reading and language skills, we place a significant emphasis on problem-solving and social interaction.

By the end of our Language Development B programme, we aim for the students to be able to:
  • recognise a range of high frequency words
  • read simple books with understanding
  • identify all the initial letter sounds (phonics) and start to blend sounds together
  • appreciate stories and be able to retell a story in their own words
  • listen to others and participate readily in group work and class discussions
  • use a pencil correctly to draw and write simple sentences of their own composition
  • have a knowledge of simple spelling patterns when writing
  • use a sufficiently broad vocabulary to be able to express themselves clearly

Language Development C

For children 6 years old
By the time our students get to the end of Language Development C, we aim for them to be self-motivated learners with a thirst for knowledge and a firm grounding in the key areas necessary for entry into primary school. The children continue with our individualised reading scheme and are expected to be reading confidently and with thorough comprehension by the end of the year. Firm in the belief that children learn best when they are having fun, our Language Development C programme has been carefully designed to combine very focussed learning activities that have specific learning outcomes with an experiential approach that allows the children to make their own discoveries about learning.

By the end of our Language Development C programme, we aim for the students to be able to: :
  • speak clearly and in full sentences
  • read and spell a range of high frequency words
  • read age-appropriate books with understanding and be able to predict a simple storyline
  • use phonic sounds and blends to assist with decoding and spelling
  • appreciate stories, retell a story in their own words and sequence the main events of a story
  • listen to others and participate confidently in group work and class discussions
  • write a short story of their own composition comprising at least three or four simple sentences
  • understand and apply basic punctuation conventions
  • use a increasingly broad vocabulary to be able to express themselves clearly

Fun with Phonics

For children 4 to 6 years old
Fun with Phonics is a unique new phonics programme designed by our curriculum team at Lorna Whiston to support children with reading, writing and spelling. It is a systematic, sequential programme that teaches students the individual letter sounds and the skills of blending and segmenting that are necessary for them to learn to read and write. The children are taught to listen carefully to the sounds of words, to identify the sounds they hear and to relate them to the words on a page.

The programme is taught through a wide variety of fun, multi-sensory activities. Puppets, puzzles, stories, songs, rhymes, art and craft activities and phonic games all feature regularly, ensuring that phonics is taught in an effective and enjoyable way.

There are three distinct levels to the Fun with Phonics programme:
  1. Ready! - introduces children to the initial letter names, sounds and shapes. Having grasped these concepts, the children are then introduced to simple blending.
  2. Steady! - focuses on CVC blending (a word made up of a consonant, vowel and consonant), two letter consonants blends, consonant digraphs and rhyming words.
  3. Go! - reviews letter blends before moving on to more complex phonics such as word endings, vowel digraphs and three letter blends.
