Language Extension 1

For children 7 years old
Our Language Extension 1 programme focuses on developing oral language skills, vocabulary, grammar, comprehension and composition. Children are taught these skills through a wide variety of interesting themes.

By the end of our Language Extension 1 programme, we aim for the students to be able to:
  • use standard English to express their ideas verbally
  • listen and respond to stories, poems and other literary stimuli
  • read age-appropriate books confidently and with understanding
  • use phonic sounds and blends to assist with decoding and spelling
  • appreciate and retell stories in their own words and sequence their main events
  • write a short composition with guidance and input from the teacher
  • attempt basic factual writing
  • understand and apply basic punctuation conventions
  • use an age-appropriate vocabulary to express themselves clearly
  • attempt simple cloze passages using helping words
  • answer simple reading comprehension passages
  • have a basic understanding of tenses and simple grammar

Language Extension 2

For children 8 years old
Lorna Whiston's Language Extension 2 programme focuses on building upon the children's vocabulary, and developing proficient reading and writing skills. In addition, there is a strong oral language component to the programme.

By the end of our Language Extension 2 programme, we aim for the students to be able to:
  • speak clearly using standard English
  • work co-operatively in groups to plan, brainstorm and problem-solve
  • read age-appropriate books confidently and with understanding and be able to read for gist and for specific information
  • summarise a book in their own words, and comment on both the main events and the characters
  • understand and apply general punctuation conventions, including the use of direct speech
  • use a broad, age-appropriate vocabulary to express themselves clearly
  • complete cloze passages
  • complete reading comprehension passages
  • consolidate their basic understanding of tenses and simple grammar

Language Extension 3

For children 9 years old
Lorna Whiston's Language Extension 3 programme focuses on giving students a solid foundation in speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, and ensuring that they are able to use a broad and expressive vocabulary in both speech and writing. This programme aims to develop children's language accuracy, by providing them with specific instruction in grammar and tense usage.

By the end of our Language Extension 3 programme, we aim for the students to be able to:
  • speak clearly using standard English
  • work co-operatively in groups to plan, brainstorm, problem-solve, give opinions and discuss ideas
  • read age-appropriate books with understanding and be able to skim and scan texts for gist and specific information
  • summarise a book in their own words and comment on the main events, characters and plot
  • plan, draft, write and edit their own compositions
  • write in different genres, including letters, poems, summaries, narratives and descriptions
  • understand and apply general punctuation conventions, including the use of direct speech
  • use a broad, age-appropriate vocabulary to express themselves clearly
  • complete cloze passages
  • succeed with reading comprehension passages based on different text types
  • have a good understanding of tenses and simple grammar

Language Extension 4

For children 10 years old
Lorna Whiston’s Language Extension 4 programme focuses on developing skills in the four main areas of language learning: speaking, listening, reading and writing. In addition, the students receive guidance and instruction in the areas of vocabulary and grammar usage.

By the end of our Language Extension 4 programme, we aim for the students to be able to:
  • speak clearly using standard English, and take part confidently in group discussions, problem-solving activities and group presentations
  • listen and respond appropriately to a variety of aural stimuli based on different genres
  • read age-appropriate books with understanding, and infer meaning from contextual clues
  • skim and scan both fictional and factual texts for gist and for specific information
  • summarise a text in their own words, and comment on the main events, the characters, the plot and predicted outcomes
  • plan, draft, write and edit their own compositions
  • write in different genres, including letters, poems, summaries, narratives, play scripts, imaginative stories and descriptions
  • understand and apply punctuation conventions, including the use of direct and indirect speech
  • use a broad, age-appropriate vocabulary to express themselves clearly
  • complete grammar and vocabulary cloze passages
  • succeed with reading comprehension passages based on different text types
  • have a good understanding of tenses and grammar

Language Extension 4, Write This Way

For children 10 years old
Students enrolled on our “Write This Way!” programme will explore a wide variety of writing genres. Each lesson contains carefully structured pre-writing, writing and consolidation activities that familiarise students with the writing focus of the lesson. In addition, all the course materials of our “Write This Way!” creative writing programme have been designed by our team of curriculum specialists to stimulate the students’ imagination and encourage creativity through written expression. 

Children who enrol for our “Write This Way!” creative writing programme will learn how to: 
  • come up with imaginative ideas for writing
  • write in a variety of different genres, encompassing the broad areas of fictional, factual and situational writing tasks
  • plan, develop, edit and improve upon their writing
  • use a wide and expressive vocabulary to write more interestingly
  • write with a greater level of accuracy, and use a wider range of tenses and grammatical structures
  • adopt different styles of written expression, suitable for different audiences

Language Extension 5

For children 11 years old
Lorna Whiston’s Language Extension 5 programme is comprehensive, challenging and delivered through the vehicle of exciting themes designed to capture the students’ interest and motivate them. The syllabus focuses on developing skills in the four main areas of language learning: speaking, listening, reading and writing. In addition, Language Extension 5 students receive guidance and instruction in the areas of vocabulary and grammar usage.

By the end of our Language Extension 5 programme, we aim for the students to be able to:
  • speak clearly using standard English, and take part confidently in group discussions, problem-solving activities and group presentations
  • listen and respond appropriately to a variety of stories and factual texts
  • read age-appropriate books with understanding, analyse characters' motives and infer meaning from contextual clues
  • complete reading comprehensions and cloze passages
  • present a summary of a text in their own words and comment on the main events, the characters, the plot and predicted outcomes
  • plan, draft, write and edit their own compositions
  • write in different genres, including letters, poems, summaries, narratives, play scripts, imaginative stories and descriptions
  • understand and apply punctuation conventions, including the use of direct and indirect speech and paragraphing
  • use a broad, age-appropriate vocabulary to express themselves clearly and accurately, including idiomatic language
  • understand and use tenses accurately and have a good knowledge of grammar

Language Extension 6

For children 12 years old
Our Language Extension 6 syllabus is both comprehensive and challenging, and is delivered through the vehicle of interesting themes designed to motivate students and keep them interested in their studies. The programme focuses on developing skills in the four main areas of language learning: speaking, listening, reading and writing, as well as vocabulary and grammar usage.

By the end of our Language Extension 6 programme, we aim for the students to be able to:
  • speak clearly using standard English, and take part confidently in conversations, group discussions, problem-solving activities and group presentations
  • listen and respond appropriately to a variety of stories, factual texts and short film excerpts
  • read aloud fluently and expressively
  • listen to and answer questions about a variety of texts
  • read age appropriate books with understanding, analyse characters' motives and infer meaning from contextual clues
  • complete reading comprehensions and cloze passages
  • complete transformation exercises successfully
  • plan, draft, write and edit and improve upon their own compositions
  • manage functional writing tasks adeptly, including letters, notes, postcards, newspaper reports
  • use a broad and expressive vocabulary in both speech and writing
  • understand and use tenses accurately, and show a good knowledge of grammar
